Where can I put it down?

Updated: Sep 19

Often in therapy we talk about "the room". At the start, clients are sometimes unsure what this means but over the time, the room (virtual or physical) becomes part of the work. It has a familiar feel, it stays the same each week and it becomes a place where we can put things down.

We might put down numerous things in therapy. We might put down memories and experiences that we haven't been able to talk about before, we might put down assumptions and values we have about the world that no longer serve us, we might put down ways of reacting that whilst protective at one point, have now become unhelpful and we may even be able to put down our masks and start to think about who we really are.

We would all love to put things down and never pick them back up again but putting things down doesn't mean we don't take them with us. Putting things down allows us the time and space to explore these thoughts and experiences, to look at them from different angles and think about them in a safe place with someone we trust. With this support, when we pick them up again, they may look or feel different. Perhaps we might be able to see them differently and use them to continue to grow.

You can contact me for counselling, online or in person in Sevenoaks, Kent via the contact me section of this website. To find out more about the therapy that I offer, please do look at the rest of my website.
